Hi
"...The night watchman jealously guards every day as a vacation he pretends not to notice the foliage that falls from the track of the greenhouse train he has a fetish for turtles who help him guard the station and had had no choice when one was swept under the barbed wire drain breaking all the rules he dug his way under the roots of the wall and was never again seen though someone heard a scream almost inhuman in the echoes of the underground of the torture garden..." - Phil Ochs, entertainer | | Thursday, April 22nd, 2004 | | 11:54 pm |
Hello
"...The banana police have surrounded the monastery come out with your legs crossed they shout thru the petal splitting speakers the high appeals have found you guilty of sobriety so take off your wretched robes and hang up your silken sneakers and before they could say hare krishna they were discharged and drowned in the underground nightmare nozzles of the torture garden..." - Phil Ochs, thinker | | Wednesday, April 21st, 2004 | | 11:02 pm |
Hey
"You've seen the artist at work; now you can watch him at his leisure No, there must be some mistake, I've only come here to deliver the carnival No, there's no mistake. You and the other deserters are only out for personal pleasure farewell you fiend, he gasped leaping on the turntable and his body was found 33 and 1/3 inches under the ground under the underground of the torture garden..." - Phil Ochs, performer the first of a few installments | | Friday, April 16th, 2004 | | 12:00 am |
Hey
"...Part two of this earnest epic finds seaweed lapping against your eyes the sailors have chosen the mystery surprise to join the flying dutchman in his search for a green disguise Still others invade the final colony to present their tinted tributes to the millionaire assassin While I stumble through this paradise considering several suicides for distant lavender lovers or bless the violence of the ridiculous revolution for self bronzing brothers and finally turn away from the turquoise towers of this comic civilization my responsibilities are done let them come let them come and I realize these last days these trials and tragedies were after all only our rehearsals for retirement." - Phil Ochs, dreamer the conclusion | | Thursday, April 15th, 2004 | | 12:00 am |
Hello
"This then is the death of the American imprisoned by his paranoia and all diseases of his innocent inventions he employs the farce of force to crush his fantasies he calls conventions of salesmen and savages to reinforce his hopelessness So the poet swordsmen and their lost generation must divorce themselves from their very motherland only for the least sensation of life or love or pain our deepest and most religious moments were on elevators posing as planes..." - Phil Ochs, American to be concluded | | Wednesday, April 14th, 2004 | | 1:10 am |
the president
President George W. Bush is an amazingly polarizing fingure. To some, he is a member of the vast right wing conspiracy, a conservative fascist whose imperial goal is to take away our civil liberties, make America a fundamentalist Christian theocracy, and, ultimately, take over the world. To others (and more than you may think), he is a member of the New World Socialist Order, a liberal who is not doing nearly enough when it comes to both upholding morality and ensuring national security. fascinating... | | 12:43 am |
Hi
"...To face the unspoken unguarded thoughts of habitual hearts a vanguard of electricians a village full of tarts who say you must protest you must protest it is your diamond duty ah but in such an ugly time the true protest is beauty and the bleeding seer crawled from the ruins of the empire and stood bleeding, bleeding on the border he said, passion has led to chaos and now chaos will lead to order. Oh I have been away for a while and I hope to be back again soon." - Phil Ochs, rebel the conclusion | | Monday, April 12th, 2004 | | 11:43 pm |
Hey
"...And a toast to the pretender who dove between kegs of cognac and floundered on the floor to be stabbed in the neck by straws once upon a time we lived by laws. From the pubs of London to the hills of Edinburgh a jealous journey on the ecstasy side of tragedy. I watched my life fade-away in a flash a quarter of a century dash through closets full of candles with never a room for rapture through a kingdom had been captured. And so I turn away from my drizzling furniture and pass old ladies sniffling by movie stars' tombs, yes I must be home again soon..." - Phil Ochs, patriot a further continuation | | 11:36 pm |
americans
I really hate hyphenated Americans. The terms African-American, Asian-American, Jewish-American, Arab-American, Muslim-American, Hispanic-American, Latin-American, etc, are all quite offensive to me. I understand the need to maintain a certain cultural identity, but this is the wrong context for that. Either you're an American or you're not. Pick one. You cannot be both. Most black people today have never even been to Africa. It seems to me that the use of these terms is, at best, petty, and at worst, treasonous. | | 11:20 pm |
blacks and politics
It seems that the liberal establishment expects all black people to be Democrats. When this does not happen, the left becomes unusually vicious (i.e. Clarence Thomas, Condoleeza Rice, J.C. Watts, Miguel Estrada, et al). The Democrats say that these men and woman are traitors to their own people. Well, they may not fit the mold, but that is because of their own intellectual and ideological independence, not because they are "Uncle Toms." Nowhere is it written that all blacks must vote Democrat. It seems to me that we have done well to create a true color-blind society (if we are not there yet, we are there legally, and we are constantly gaining when it comes to the minds of the younger generations), and that by the Democratic Party's continual expectance (and demand) that all blacks be liberals, this once-great party has become the true rascist in this case. | | Sunday, April 11th, 2004 | | 3:12 pm |
Hi
"...Some might mistake it for a coin it sparkles so over the waterless waves. Others might suspect a falcon to attack their own flagellant flying saucers. Now who would be that depraved certainly not the children of Chaucer's. But it's only a filament of fantasy diffused through the stained glass window of the haunted whorehouse the last desperate laugh of a fool's passion to say I have been faithful to the Cynara in my fashion..." - Phil Ochs, singer a continuation from yesterday | | 3:03 pm |
political thoughts
It seems to me that the two major political parties do more fighting in Washington than get things done. Believe me, I will always be in favor of open debate. But, there has to come a time when debate is over and ideas are acted upon. Is there some way for politicians, or any of us, to come to an agreement for what is best for the nation and still hold true to their ideals? I hope so. Recent political discourse has become particularly ugly. As my dad always says, it seems that if a liberal came up with a cure for cancer, conservatives would have bad things to say about it, and if a conservative came up with a cure for cancer, liberals would have bad things to say about it. And, is it possible for someone to be a conservative idealist, or must all idealists be liberals? Furthermore, must all blacks, hispanics, women, and Jews be Democrats? | | 2:56 pm |
thoughts
the merits of political idealism: few, admittedly, and it seems as if some of you are quite skeptical in reference to one of my last posts. Well, so am I. But, somebody has to try. Without idealism, none of the major social changes over the last hundreds of years would ever have happened. If you look at the world and say, it is what it is, let's deal with it, I guess thats fine. But I dont, or, at least, I dont want to. I want to fight for change, because change is possible. Not many men have acted on this; even fewer have been successful. Well, I want to try, give it a shot, for whatever it's worth. "Some men see things as they are and ask why, I dream things that never were and ask why not." - Robert Kennedy The test is to back up these fighting words with true fight. | | 12:05 am |
a few quotes
went to the villa mini-con today, here are a few interesting quotes: "unity is great but uniform is not" - Katie from Villa "the nation must not conform to you, you must conform to your nation" - Dan Fego, Vice Mayor of the ECR, New Rochelle HS | | 12:00 am |
a few phrases
i often wonder, are the world's problems able to be solved? - the only answer is yes, it seems to me that that can be the only possible reason we're here - i want to end poverty, end war, all in our lifetime - and when it's all done i'll be able to relax, and people will say, there walks Jared Gilman, the man who helped change our world - that will be the day when i will rest | | Saturday, April 10th, 2004 | | 11:48 pm |
Hello
"I've been away for a while but I hope to be back again soon. I'll return with a tune to show all was not lost on the naked moors. From the razor's edge of a Lourvre of loveless beds a tone tossed across an ocean of seas, pass the body please...." - Phil Ochs, songwriter more to come if you wish | | Wednesday, June 26th, 2002 | | 10:46 pm |
Food for Thought
Many of you have asked me why I do not frequently update this journal. I hope that this narrative will put at rest some of your troubled minds. What do you want me to write? Do you want me to write that I went to the mall today? There, fine, I said it. I went to the mall. How exciting. Happy? Or would you like me to add that I then visited the homes of Brett and Matt, my two best friends? Well, I did, if you even care. If you're Matt or Brett, you know I was there. If you weren't do you really care where I was? Tuesday I went bowling. There I said it. Boy, it was the best day I had in my life. You want me to write something like that everyday? Well I won't. I'm just won't do it. Sure, I had a good time, but I consider it nothing to write home about, as well as nothing to write in my live journal about. Monday I also went to the mall again. What an exciting life I live. Well, if you havn't already guessed it from my comments, which are drenched with sarcasm, I do not feel it is necessary to constantly update this live journal. I do not think writing about my day is very interesting to my readers. (After all, from what they have told me, THREE friends can't be wrong!!!) If I was to bad-mouth someone, would I do it so the whole world of readers can see? If I need to talk to someone about something (about doing the thing), I would do it directly. Why should I tell my deepest and most private feelings to everyone? So why keep a live journal at all, you may be asking. Well, it may be a good forum to write down an interesting quote or record a rare epiphany. Anyway, I look forward to continuing to read the journals of my friends, who continue (God knows why) to make use of this free service (would anyone actally pay for this???), as you should look forward to reading my bi- centennial entries. | | Tuesday, June 4th, 2002 | | 8:02 pm |

Variable Moods
There are 2 people - lets call them X and Y. X and Y are each other's friends and they are both my friends as well. Recently X and Y have been fighting, and that has put me somewhat in the middle. Sure both X and Y have their shortcomings; for example, they are both very competitive. But all of their friends will attest to their good qualities, which far outweigh the bad. (We all have our negative qualities, anyway.) I would like to offer my help in resolving these differences; i believe if both parties talk it will be better. (god help me, I sound like a guidance counselor) There are some unresolved issues with both parties. I believe it would help if X approached Y or vice versa. Basically, X and Y, you have no choice - you will be friends! And you both know who you are. If any of you wish talk wth me about this I will listen with open ears. Happy Birthday to Robert on Tuesday Happy Birthday to Brooke on Wednesday | | Sunday, June 2nd, 2002 | | 12:24 pm |
Serious Stuff, as well as stuff from the "Lighter Side"
Well Matt I read your entry from last night and you should know one thing - the reason for our conversation last night was that change is possible. Wait, not even possible...inevitabe. Think about that. I'll talk seriously whenever you want. Jason - I read your journal entry from last week. I know this will sound strange to every1 but in a way I wish I had the courage to be more like you. On another note, since I haven't written for a while, I had a great day yesterday. I thought SAT II's were hard but I wasn't going to waste time studying for them. I loved playing sports yesterday - I woud play more in my neighborhood but the kids there are all jackasses. So maybe we can do that again sometime, Brett - even the pool! And one final thing (to show how my mind works), yesterday was a great food day: London Broil steak sandwich, fries, noodle soup, carvel ice cream, pizza, chickn parm, ralph's ices, cream soda, 2 vanilla cokes (one handmake w/ syrup, the other was the new bottled type), and a coffee roll donut thing. Pretty sad if you ask me. |
